     The letters of the alphabet

 

What can we do with letters?
Cut big letter from construction paper. Let children find pictures related to this letter in magazines. Cut pictures and paste on outline of the letter.

 

 

Letter jars

I made these letter jars with plastic jars and labels. Children have to sort small plastic objects in the correct jar.

 

Ring books

I am a bit fanatic of paper bags, in this case I used them to make an abc book, my children cut and place pictures inside the bags

 

 

Letter mats

I made this letter mats with upper case letters. I place some plastic objects in a basket. Children have to sort objects in the correct mat. In this case, bear= B or car =C

 

Brainstorming

Choose a letter and brainstorm as many things as you can beginning with this letter, for instance..

"Letter B. How many animals beginning with B can you name?"

Pocket chart

You can introduce a letter a day or a week using the pocket chart. Prepare some cards with the letters of the alphabet and pics that begin with that letter.
 

Body letters

Make body letters, using many children on the floor.

or ..animals, fruits, names,, food, toys, etc...

Letter bottles

You will need:

·        small plastic bottles

·        foam or plastic letters and props

 Fill plastic bottles with sand or water.

Add props for children to identify letters.

Seal the bottle.

If you are working with older children you can prepare a worksheet for them to draw or write the objects.

Or you can prepare a worksheet with the objects so they can check the letters of the sheet as they find them in the bottle.

A- plastic ants, mini apple erasers
B- buttons, band-aids
C-coin, candy
D- plastic duck, dominoes
E- eraser,  plastic egg
F- feather, plastic flowers

G- stick of gum, grass
H- paper heart cut-outs, happy face sticker
I- ice cream mini erasers, small plastic insect
J- jelly beans, jewelry
K- keys, plastic king crown
L-leaf, lace
Mm- money, marbles
N- nails, nuts

O- oval cut out shape, plastic olive
P- pencil, popcorn
Q- mini quilt, Q-tip
R- plastic ring, ribbon

S- straws, piece of sponge
T-teabag, toothpick

U- mini umbrella, unicorn
V- picture of violin, violet piece of paper
W- whistle, wallpaper scraps

X- a number 6 (for ending x sound),  x-ray cut outs
Y- yellow paper,  yarn
Z- zipper, zoo animals

Sensory letters

You can use sensory materials to make letters such as peas, shaving cream and rise

Some sensory materials you can use:

Suggested activities:

ABC Puzzles, children put together alphabet puzzles, upper and lower case.

Letter/Sound Match, children play "Memory" using picture cards and letter cards.

Pocket Chart, children read a familiar song or a poem in a pocket chart.  Then they can record missing words in the song or poem on a sheet.

ABC Board Game, children play in pairs.  A child rolls a die, then advances his game marker.  He looks at the picture he lands on, and tells his partner

the letter the picture starts with or the name of the picture or if they are older they can spell the word (choose easy pics) .

ABC Fishing, children fish (paper fish with pictures glued on and paperclips) for pictures using fishing poles (dowels with string and a magnet).

Letter Formation, children trace alphabet dot-to-dots using markers.

ABC Bingo, children play bingo with the letters of the alphabet.

ABC tic tac toe, children play the traditional tic tac toe but with letters.
